AGL vs Energy Australia : Electricity Deals & Plan Comparison
AGL vs Energy Australia : Electricity Deals & Plan Comparison
With the recent deregulation of energy retailers in the majority of states, there are two energy providers that are two standouts purely from the actual size of the energy retailer – AGL and Energy Australia. Together they serve 5.3 million customers around Australia. You might be asking what are the cheapest deals, and what energy retailer has the best customer service? This handy guide from Billy Explores will help you compare energy plans from AGL vs Energy Australia, and also detail the key differences between AGL vs Energy Australia.
AGL vs Energy Australia – Can I Get Them In My State?
As you know, different states in Australia have different regulations when it comes to energy retailers and energy plans. This is so the government can generally set energy plans cost. It depends on where you live. If you live in Tasmania or the Northern Territory you have lucked out as neither is available as a full offering (both electricity and gas).
In ACT, Energy Australia has operations but not AGL. Also, there are part offerings between AGL vs Energy Australia. For example, Western Australia only has a gas offering from AGL (no electricity) – no operations from Energy Australia. In Queensland, both AGL and Energy Australia both have operations, except Energy Australia doesn’t offer gas in Queensland.
Of course, it all depends on where you live in Australia and whether AGL and Energy Australia offer services, but you can compare energy plans and get the best deal for your location through Billy Explores!
AGL vs Energy Australia – Who Has the Best Energy Plans?

AGL and EnergyAustralia both offer multiple plans to residents with varying rates and discounts depending on your electricity distributor. EnergyAustralia’s plans include the Total Plan, No Frills, Balance Plan Home and Basic Home plans. The first two are fixed rate contracts, meaning energy charges are set for 12 months, while the third is a variable rate plan with a guaranteed discount. The last offer is also a variable rate plan, however, it doesn’t offer any discounts. AGL has two market offers in each state it serves, both of which come with variable rates.
EnergyAustralia Plans
- No Frills: Stepping away from discounts, this plan also has fixed rates for 12 months, however customers must sign up for direct debit and email correspondence. Like all EnergyAustralia plans in Victoria, they have no exit fees, which is great for those looking to shop around once the 12 month benefit period has lapsed.
- Basic Home: This is a variable rate plan with an ongoing benefit period. It has no exit fees or late payment fees, making it a decent option for the ‘set and forget’ type of customer.
- Total Plan: This is a fixed rate plan with a one-year benefit period that gives customers a modest guaranteed discount off usage and supply charges.
- Balance Plan Home: Similar to the Total Plan product, this plan also offers a guaranteed discount off usage and supply charges for 12 months. Balance Plan Home however, offers variable rates, not fixed.
AGL Plans
- Value Saver: This is a variable rate offer with an ongoing benefit period. It has no conditional discounts or exit fees, but customers will have to agree to e-billing.
- Flexible Saver: This product is similar to the Value Saver plan above, which comes with variable usage and supply rates for an ongoing plan period. Customers also have access to AGL Rewards.
